What is A2P 10DLC Registration?
A2P 10DLC registration is the process of registering and verifying a 10-digit Long Code (10DLC) phone number for Application-to-Person (A2P) messaging purposes. This registration process is essential for businesses and organizations that wish to send automated text messages to individuals or customers using local phone numbers.
A2P: It is short for Application-to-Person messaging and involves exchanging text messages between your business and prospects using applications, software, or automated systems. You can use A2P messaging for marketing messages, transactional notifications, appointment reminders, and alerts.
10DLC: It is a standard, 10-digit Long Code (10DLC) that looks like regular phone numbers used by individuals for texting and calling. Unlike shortcodes (e.g., 444500), which are typically shorter and easier to remember, 10DLCs are standard phone numbers associated with specific geographic regions.
The goal of A2P 10DLC registration is to verify the identity and intent of the messaging campaign sender, ensuring that the phone number is used for legitimate and compliant messaging.

To register for A2P 10DLC, you must provide your business identity and use case for sending messages. Later in this article, we’ll explain how Aloware simplifies the A2P 10DLC registration process.
Why is A2P 10DLC Registration?
Carriers implemented the 10-digit long code to protect consumers from spam messages. 10DLC requires businesses to register their brands and campaigns with The Campaign Registry before sending SMS and MMS over local phone numbers.
A2P 10DLC (Application-to-Person 10-Digit Long Code) registration improves the quality, reliability, and trustworthiness of your business messaging.
Here are the reasons you need A2P 10DLC registration.
- It helps you comply with the new regulations and requirements of the US carriers, who have the authority to block or filter unregistered messages.
- It enhances A2P messaging quality and security by verifying and trusting the source and preventing spam and abuse.
- It enhances the customer experience and satisfaction by providing more reliable and consistent delivery of messages and allowing customers to easily opt-in and out of messages.
- It increases the efficiency and scalability of A2P messaging by allowing your business to send more messages per second and offer different service tiers based on needs and budget.
A2P 10DLC Registration lets you send customers high-quality and secure A2P messages while complying with the carrier rules and regulations.
Challenges and Complexities of A2P 10DLC Registration
Depending on your knowledge and support team, A2P 10DLC registration can be a complex process. Here are some of the challenges and complexities often highlighted by businesses:
Multiple steps involved
Registering for A2P 10DLC can be quite a cumbersome process for businesses, as it entails completing a series of mandatory steps. These steps generally include creating a business profile, registering a US A2P brand, and specifying a campaign use case.
However, each step requires different information and documentation, making the entire process time-consuming and prone to errors.
The strict requirements
Regarding A2P (Application-to-Person) messaging, the registration process involves meeting specific strict requirements. A primary requirement is a valid opt-in process, which ensures that users have given explicit consent to receive messages.
Additionally, having a clear unsubscribe policy is essential, as it allows users to opt out of receiving messages at any time. Another critical requirement for A2P registration is a robust spam prevention program to prevent unsolicited messages from being sent to users and to detect and block any potential spam or fraudulent activities.
It’s worth noting that businesses that do not meet these requirements may have their registration rejected or their messages blocked, which can hurt their ability to communicate with customers effectively.
Cost
A2P (Application-to-Person) 10DLC registration can be costly for businesses, as they must pay substantial fees to the carriers and their campaign service providers.
This registration cost can be a significant barrier for small businesses, particularly those that only send a few text messages.
As a result, some businesses may be hesitant to invest in A2P messaging, limiting their ability to communicate effectively with their customers.
The lack of clarity
Since the A2P 10DLC regulations are still in their early stages, there are certain aspects of the process that businesses need clarification on. This lack of clarity can be a significant challenge for businesses trying to ensure they comply with the regulations.
Without clarity, it can be difficult for businesses to know what to do to comply with the regulations, leading to confusion and potential compliance issues.
