What is an IVR?

IVR stands for Interactive Voice Response — it's the automated phone system that greets your callers, plays a menu ("Press 1 for sales, 2 for support"), and routes them to the right person or department based on what they choose. Modern IVRs do a lot more than menu trees: they can route by caller ID, time of day, CRM data, or what the caller actually says, and they can hand off to an AI voice agent that handles the request end-to-end. The result is shorter wait times for callers and far less manual triage for your team.

How does an IVR work?

When a caller dials your number, the IVR answers, plays a greeting, and listens for input — either touch-tone presses ("Press 1...") or spoken keywords. Based on the input, it decides what to do: route the call to a specific agent or team, send it to voicemail, schedule a callback, or hand it off to an AI voice agent that can answer questions and complete tasks.
